Devil's Island was not a "plum" assignment for keepers of the US lighthouse service. It is one of the most remote of the Apostle Islands light stations. When storms sweep across Lake Superior, the sea caves and blow holes were known to generate eerie sounds making this an inhospitable place to be stationed as a keeper.
